The conclusion of the 2025 WDRA Summit World Championships presented by SunCoast Performance occurred on Saturday, where beautiful weather and no major mechanical malfunctions created an efficient day of competition.ย

For those who earned the first-round runner-up, $300 was awarded to assist with towing costs and to recognize their accomplishment of qualifying. At the end of the evening, the victors earned the coveted World Championship title, thousands of cash payouts, a WDRA Champion card, and the WDRA Rod Trophy. The second place drivers would take home a laser-engraved piston courtesy of MAHLE Motorsport North America to go along with their cash.

No-Box World Championship

The No-Box competitors had a $20,000 winning payout while the runner up would take home $5,000. The quarterfinalists were Matt Luckett, Ben McIntosh, Bobby Mattera, Mason Fix, Brian Yerger Jr, and Zach Livingston. Fix illuminated the dreaded red bulb beside Luckett, who wheelied into the next round. Both drivers ran one above their respective dial ins, but Livingstonโ€™s .012 reaction time earned him the .028 margin of victory.

Yerger fouled at the start while Mattera ran dead on his 5.67 dial in for the win. In the semifinal, Mattera was .015 and ran dead-on again to take the win over Luckett who was .026 and one above his dial. Livingston, representing Eddyville Raceway Park, earned the best bye run of the event to secure his spot in the final round.

Livingston had the reaction time advantage with a .019 in the final, however the Buick Opel driven by Mattera was dead-on for the third pass in a row to earn the Summit No Box World Championship with a .013 margin of victory. Mattera swept the accomplishments this season as Maryland International Racewayโ€™s Summit Sportsman Drag Racing Series Champion and claimed the No-Box main event victory during the WDRA Summit Eastern Bracket Finals.

Box World Championship

Joseph Newberry - 2025 WDRA Box World Champion.
Mike Peters - 2025 WDRA Motorcycle World Champion.

Top bulb action followed in the run order with the Box class also boasting a $20,000 to win and $5,000 to runner up format. The final five drivers were Joey Mattera, Joseph Newberry, Kelsey Dufresne, Ernie Goodson, and Allen Owens. Goodson claimed the first win light of the round by putting together a .026 total package which left Mattera mathematically ineligible with a .029 reaction time.ย

Owens had the starting line advantage with a .026; however, he found himself eight thousandths behind at the stripe as Newberry earned the win. Dufresne ran dead on his 5.28 dial in on the solo pass to the next round. In the semifinal, Newberry let go .005 and ran one above his dial in to secure the win over Dufresne, who was .017 and broke out one hundredth. This time, it was Goodson who earned the bye run, and he decided only to break the staging beams and wait for his final round opponent.ย

The double dragster finale featured Newberry representing Brainerd Motorsports Park versus Goodson, who was the WDRA Summit Northern Bracket Finals main event champion. Both drivers drilled the tree and Newberryโ€™s .008 and 5.199 on a 5.18 dial earned the prestigious Box World Championship by one thousandth of a second beside Goodsonโ€™s .001 and two above pass.ย

Motorcycle World Championship

The Motorcycle and Sled riders were competing for $5,000 to win and $1,500 for a runner up finish in the second year of celebrating these talented competitors. Mike Peters, Brian Snyder, Jeff Green, Austin Easter, Todd Payne, and John Fitzpatrick made up the final six. Peters had a better reaction time with a .023 light and ran closer to his dial to take the win over Easter.

Payne had a .011 starting line advantage but breaks out at the finish line beside Snyder who runs one above his 5.85 dial in for the win. Green is .002 red to send Fitzpatrick to the next round who cashes in on the free time run by running three hundredths under his dial in. Fitzpatrick is in control at the tree with a .041 light and Snyder runs into technical difficulties mid track for the loss. Peters earned the stress-free ride into the final while representing Lancaster Motorplex.

Mid America Dragwayโ€™s Fitzpatrick returns to his second consecutive final round, where only three thousandths separate the pair on the starting line. After qualifying for five World Championship events and never winning a round, Peters runs dead on his 5.59 dial in to earn the Motorcycle World Championship rights while Fitzpatrick breaks out two thousandths.

Joseph Newberry - 2025 WDRA Box World Champion.
Mike Peters - 2025 WDRA Motorcycle World Champion.

Junior Dragster World Championship

The youngest drivers on the property battled for $10,000 to win and $3,000 for second place in the Junior Dragster ranks. Autumn Jones, Ryan Alexander, Ella Parsley, Robert Santmyer, Kane Kern, and Hadley Yoder remained in round number four.

Santmyer is .008 red next to Jones who is .016 green and eight thousandths under her dial for the win. Alexander has the starting line advantage with a .056 light, but breaks out .0009 more than Kern who advances to the semifinal. Parsley uses a .002 reaction time to put together a .013 total package which leaves the .041 reaction time of Yoder mathematically ineligible.

Kern is in control at the starting line and takes the .034 margin of victory over Jones. Unsurprisingly, Parsley earned the bye into the final courtesy of her near-perfect prior reaction time. In the final,

Parsley from Southside Dragway has the better light with a .028 but Kern from STATE CAPITOL RACEWAY breaks out less at the finish line to earn the Junior Dragster World Championship title.

Kane Kern - 2025 WDRA Junior Dragster World Champion.
... and the 2025 WDRA championship party begins!

Sportsman World Championship

Last but not least, the Sportsman class completed the run order, with a $10,000 winnerโ€™s purse and a $3,000 runner-up prize up for grabs. JJ Pennington, Chris Mesbergen, Darrel Goheen, Chad Brewer, and Roger Miller made up the final five drivers. Miller had the starting line advantage with his .020 light, but runs too far above his 10.81 dial beside Goheen who runs one above to illuminate the electricity in his lane. Pennington turns on the red bulb beside Brewer who puts together a .038 package on the free pass.ย

Mesbergen earns a solo shot of his own thanks to his prior .007 reaction time. In the semifinal, Mesbergen continues to crush the tree using a .008 light to create a .027 total package to eliminate Goheen, who was dead on his 7.75 dial in. Brewer had been competing without an alternator since round three and avoided making a full pull on the bye run to save his ride for the final.

Brewer becomes the second victor for Brainerd Motorsports Park with a seven-thousandths starting line advantage and running dead on his 7.40 dial to take the Sportsman World Championship over the breakout run of Mesbergen from Mid Michigan Motorplex.ย

Long after the winnerโ€™s circle celebrations are over, the cash has been spent, and the roar of racecars has faded, these talented drivers can remain proud of overcoming the competition and earning the right to be called WDRA Summit World Champions.

As the lights dim on Montgomery International Dragway, sponsor banners are carefully rolled up, and the WDRA trailer rolls out of the gate, the WDRA crew can rest assured knowing the racers and facilities maintained top priority throughout the season. Until next time, safe travels, and may the win lights stay in your lane!
